Active defence refers to a type of defensive play that is proactive and aggressive, rather than passive and reactive. In active defence, the player takes the initiative and makes moves that threaten the opponent's pieces or restrict their mobility. By doing so, the player is able to control the tempo of the game and maintain a strong position, even in difficult defensive scenarios. One of the key benefits of active defence is that it allows the player to maintain control of the game and to create counter-play. Instead of simply trying to survive and defend against the opponent's threats, the player is able to take the initiative and create new threats of their own. This can put the opponent on the defensive and create opportunities for the player to simplify the position or create a winning scenario.
